Being Wrong Sucks

Paris Hilton has been deemed one of the "10 Most Fascinating People" of 2004. Sure, we can try and wiggle away from this- it is just a Barbara Walters special and the category is fascinating rather than interesting or successful or important. But try as we might, this reflects something about US.

To briefly review her contribution(s). Her career, if you can call it that, consists of slumming for Fox. She also contributed what VH1 (VH1!) voted the Big Catchphrase of 2004- "That's Hot!" And let us not overlook the party photos, the banal sex tape, and the heiress irrelevance (her dog wears nicer clothing than you do).

Nothing here even approaches fascinating. But we actually tune in and are interested. A year ago shows such as Born Rich, Rich Girls, and The Simple Life began to peel back the veil of wealth. Frank Rich wrote a column saluting the new honesty about wealth. I expressed hope that this would spark a new awareness that their lives are not relevant to our lives. I was wrong.
